On August 30, 2022, Starbucks Coffee came out with its infamous annual pumpkin spice latte in stores nationwide.
Along with the popular beverage, the coffee giant also came out with a few other seasonal treats such as the Pumpkin Scone, the Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffin, Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew, and the Pumpkin & Pepita Loaf. This year, they also came out with a new seasonal beverage called the Apple Crisp Macchiato.
However, this popular beverage and its counterparts may not be as well-liked as people think. Coffee drinker Sydney LePorte claimed, “I like it, it’s just sometimes inconvenient when I’m in a rush since it’s always busy. Also, it’s pretty expensive and I don’t always want to spend 5-7 dollars on a drink that’ll last me 15 minutes.”
Starbucks Coffee’s marketing team has had a significant impact, specifically with the Pumpkin Spice Latte and its popularity. According to an anonymous survey conducted about the drink, 68.8% believe that the marketing team has made a decent impact on the success of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. Over half of the survey respondents agree that the latte is overrated and less than 5% of the people who filled out the survey think it’s underrated.
Starbucks lover and high school student, Lauren Dunn stated, “I think they taste pretty good but they definitely make it seem like a lot more of a big deal and they present it as this really great thing, and when it comes down to actually tasting it, [The Pumpkin Spice Latte] was not as great.”
There are many different ways that Starbucks markets their Pumpkin Spice Latte such as mouth-watering pictures of them on menus, social media buzz, and the fact that they are only available for a short amount of time.
Even though some may agree with the fact that the drink that they market and the drink that you taste are completely different beverages, others say that the Pumpkin Spice Latte and the Starbucks beverages overall live up to all the commotion they receive. High school student and Starbucks regular Ava Hohenadel stated, “Overall it’s pretty good. I like it. [Starbucks is] a good place to stop and get coffee.”
Overall, with all of the differing opinions on the coffee company, there’s no denying its popularity in society.
