Quizlet’s Costly Charging

The studying platform Quizlet started its premium subscription on August 1st, 2022, which has led to many features beginning to cost money after a few free times of use.

Students and teachers have used Quizlet countless times over the years to help study for multiple classes. The website has started making people pay after using the test feature once and the flashcard feature five times. There have been some attempts at making a knockoff version of Quizlet like Knowt. Knowt has advertised to students and teachers that they are able to copy and paste Quizlets they have made onto their website, in order to continue studying for free. This program does have some bugs in it and is relatively new, causing there not to be as many study cards from other people. There are some features that are different from Knowt, including the layout and the addition of school textbooks.

Biology teacher Amber Fairbanks talked about her experience with the studying platform costing money. She spoke about how she does not want to pay for the premium feature of Quizlet. Fairbanks added, “Same thing with Blooket or even Kahoot, [they] charge. They all charge whether it is monthly or yearly, and I just won’t pay it.” Kahoot has made ‘Kahoot! Pro’ for teachers to pay $3 a month for the choice of multi-select answers, advanced slide layouts and a premium image library. Blooket also has a paid version of their games, with features ranging from larger live games, early game access and the merging of different question sets.

Spanish teacher Stacie McEniry talked about not having trouble with Quizlet. She has made multiple sets on the website over the last few years. “I don’t need the bells and whistles where you can create classes and have it keep track of how your students do and all of that. I haven’t had that capability for a couple of years,” McEniry said.  With the premium feature, Quizlet Plus, they offer teachers the ability to track students’ progress and some learning modes. McEniry also talked about if they had made the access to sets cost money all of a sudden that that would be unfair. “When you take the time to make a Quizlet on their website, that takes time, and if they’re going to change the rules in the middle of the game that’s unfair.” So far, Quizlet is not making changes to sets free.

Junior Makenna Davis had some experience with Quizlet recently. “Basically I hit the learning thing and it gave me 6 questions and then it was like ‘okay you’ve learned this now let’s go onto round 2’, and I did that up to 5 times and it told me my free uses were up and I couldn’t learn anymore.” Davis had used the program to learn AP Chemistry and couldn’t learn a full set due to the set limit on the features she was using. She stated she would not pay for Quizlet and wants to find a different app to use in order to study.
