Gannon Buhr Feature

Northwest High School student-athlete Gannon Buhr is a professional disk golf player and two-time Professional Disk Golf Association (PDGA) Junior World Champion.

Junior Gannon Buhr began playing disk golf in 2014. As of 03/12/2022 Buhr is ranked 15th in the world and second in the Disk Golf Pro Tour points. Disk golf season is from February-October. During the season, Buhr competes in various tournaments across the U.S. most weekends and practices his sport daily. Buhr stated, “[My favorite event has been] the Las Vegas challenge because I almost won and gained lots of fans and supporters.” As well as the Las Vegas challenge, Buhr has enjoyed playing in Vermont because of the beautiful landscape.  During his off-season, he participates in bodyweight training and lots of indoor practice.

Buhr came across the sport of disk golf by accident, but after finding it fun and having success he decided to continue playing. Buhr models his game after his biggest role model in the sport, Will Schusterick, a professional disk golf player who has won the U.S. Disk Golf Championship three times. As well as modeling his game after Schusterick, he teaches himself through his knowledge of the sport, lots of practice and Youtube videos.

Buhr has attended Waukee schools since third grade. Outside of disk golf, he enjoys participating in other sports like basketball and in his free time likes to solve Rubik’s cubes. Although disk golf takes up a majority of his time, he is able to manage his schoolwork by bringing his computer with him, when he travels, to work on the road. 

Because of disk golf, Buhr feels he has been able to meet so many new people and improve his communication skills. Buhr stated, “I have lots of fans that come up and ask for autographs and I talk to everyone.” He hopes to one day be the number one player in the world. Buhr emphasized, “Disk Golf is growing so fast and becoming a bigger deal.” In the future, he hopes to make disk golf his full-time job and to have a part in growing the sport.
